Menzies Research Institute will today officially launch its latest initiative, the Menzies Research Institute Scholarship Fund, awarding young researchers for their creative and innovative research.

Director of the Menzies Research Institute, Professor Simon Foote said the new Menzies' Scholarship Fund will provide significant support this year for five young researchers to begin a career in innovative research in Tasmania."

"The Menzies Scholarship Fund provides students with significant financial and academic support to study at Menzies in their area of research expertise," Professor Foote said.

The five young researchers' particular areas of research include diabetes, cystic fibrosis, neuroscience, immunology and malaria.

"Honours scholars are essential to Menzies' success and they are the very future of our research," Professor Foote said.

"Today's historical launch has been made possible through the generous support of the local corporate community and individual supporters."

"Veolia Environmental Services, Corporate Express, Mansfield Builders and the Ian Matterson family have shown considerable support for the work we do here at Menzies and for the future of research, by supporting of young scholars," Professor Foote said.

Ron Ward, Group General Manager Tasmania said that Veolia is hoping that by supporting a young researcher they will be part of funding a cure.

"It is part of Veolia's philosophy to give back to the communities in which it does business. And Menzies makes a positive contribution to the local community and beyond, through its world-class medical research," Mr Ward said.

"I believe it is important that corporate organisations are committed to being socially responsible," Mr Ward said.

Scott Wilson, State Sales Manager, Corporate Express Tasmania said that putting back dollars into the local community is vitally important as part of our company's Corporate Social Responsibility focus.

The Menzies Research Institute Scholarship Awards are awarded to students for one to five years.
