World-renowned immunologist, Professor Sir Gustav Nossal AC CBE will today launch the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) - Medical Research Week® for Australia in Hobart.

Professor Sir Gustav Nossal (Sir Gus), the 2008 ASMR medallist, will begin his national tour for ASMR- Medical Research Week® in Hobart, when he meets the four ASMR - Medical Research Week ® postgraduate student finalists for Tasmania.

ASMR - Medical Research Week® fosters excellence in health and medical research and promotes community understanding and support for medical research. In alignment with these goals, the student award aims to recognise outstanding contributions to medical research by Tasmanian tertiary students, and provide an opportunity to share their research results with the medical research community.

In addition to scientific excellence and achievement, significant merit will be placed upon the ability of the candidate to communicate his/her research at a level understandable to the wider scientific community, and the potential value of this research to health and medicine.

This year 19 students entered the Tasmanian ASMR - Medical Research® student award.

The winner of the Tasmanian student award will be announced at the ASMR Medical Research Week® annual dinner tonight at the Cascade Visitors Centre.

Sir Gus was knighted in 1977 and made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1989. His work helped build the foundations of modern immunology.
