How can myelin changes influence learning and memory?

Newborn oligodendrocytes add myelin to the brain throughout life, and the amount of myelin produced increases with learning.  It is well established that learning is mediated by structural and functional modifications made to synapses, which are the small junctions that form between nerve cells and allow them to communicate.  This project investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms that allow old and new oligodendrocytes to influence nerve cells and modify nerve cell function.
